About

Artist Biography

William Godfrey lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina. His art education is self-taught, through self-reflection and by making art creation a daily practice. He uses color, shape and line to convey a sense of introspection in a world where everything is impermanent. He believes that art is necessary for human connection and understanding. Artistic influences include the tradition of using primary color and simple composition to reduce the subject to its essential elements. He is currently working on a series of portraits and abstracts.

Artist Statement

I make drawings and collages of people and places about the human experience. Simple geometric designs are created with digital and traditional drawing, paint and physical materials such as paper and fabric. The choice and arrangement of color, shape or line emphasizes the inner complexity in my portraits, and creates irregular patterns and visual movement in my abstract collages, reminding me of change itself. I often use primary color in my work, as I believe there is raw honesty in these basic colors to make something positive.

I title, sign and date all artwork on the back of the support.
